Perineal rehabilitation is a
therapy through movement 1.
The oldest mention of this therapy occurred for the treatment of urinary incontinence, in
the "Swedish Work"medical text published in 1861. In this article they did not
describe the type of such exercises 2.
Perineal rehabilitation uses exercises for muscle strenghtening, based on the idea that
reapeated voluntary movements provide increase in the muscular strenght 3.
The effects of perineal rehabilitation are based on the development, improvement,
restauration and muscular coordination.
The strenght and ability that a muscle or muscular group has to develop tension that
results in a maximum effort, dinamical as well as static, in relation to the resistance
imposed on these muscles 4.
The strenght of a normal muscle is measured by manual muscle exams, where the answer to
the movement against gravity or maximum resistance is graduated. As a muscle contracts and
the tension develops, a force is put into action. The amount of force produced by the
muscle depends on a variety of biomechanical, physiological and neuromuscular factors 1.
