A new surgical procedure for treatment of stress Urinary Incontinence developed by Ulmsten, the tension free vaginal tape has begun to be incorporated by the specialists in Urogynecology as an option. In spite of the four of five year follow-up in Sweden, in our midst it is only known for a year and seven months. The experience of the Gynecology Department of the São Paulo University is of 14 cases. The results in the average cure and improvement are of 80% to 90% respectively, but the follow-up time is short. We did not observe in these patients any significant intra-operatory complication. Our opinion is that this procedure is promiser, but it should not substitute others that are sanctioned, like Burch's surgery and the sling with the fascia sling. It constitutes an elective surgery for selected cases with a high surgical risk, because the procedure is done with a local anesthesia, and in situations where the relation cost-benefit is evaluated (short period hospitalization).
